Until Thursday 19th Lisbon hosted the ‘International Golf Travel Market’ (IGTM) and the Tourism Department, coordinated by the first deputy mayor and councillor of the branch at the Mijas Town Hall, José Carlos Martín (Cs), travelled to the Portuguese capital to promote the golf segment of the city in this forum which is considered the most important meeting point worldwide in this sector.

“This fair brings together tour operators, travel agencies and professionals from this community at an international level and we have deployed all our strength together with the Mijas Golf Courses Association. We have an intense agenda of meetings and a marked objective: we want to attract the North American player”, said Martin.

According to data from the Mijas courses, the increase in players coming from Canada and the USA has been remarkable in recent months and a further increase of around 20% is expected for next year. “These figures are very positive for our city as we are talking about tourists with high purchasing power who spend on average more than twice as much in the destinations they visit than the general holiday tourist”, said the Tourism councillor.

International golfers account for 60 million worldwide, with the USA having the largest number. Also, golfers stay longer, at 11.9 days compared to 7.4 days for tourism as a whole, in addition to the fact that they are an enhancer of destinations beyond traditional holidays.

"This tourist helps us to put an end to seasonality, as they play in the low season, which keeps the economy dynamic beyond the summer months and maintains jobs all year round”, assured the councillor.
