The Fuengirola River, covering an area of 35.10 hectares, is classified as SAC (Special Area of Conservation ES 6170022) within the Natura 2000 Network, under the Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC. The main reason for this is the vulnerability of the habitat regarding environmentalimpacts and the need to conserve the population of ´Lutra Lutra` European otters and the ´Oxigastra curtisii ` Orange spotted emerald dragonflies that still live in the best preserved stretches of this river ecosystem.
