After a beach clean-up at El Faro de Calaburras, all eyes focused on a spot on the lookout point, where the views couldn’t be better. Here, since Saturday 7th, as well as enjoying a privileged view of the coastline, visitors can read a new information panel created by the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation in collaboration with the Mijas Town Hall, which tells us about posidonia. “Here we describe this marine plant, because not everyone is familiar with it and is present on the coast of Mijas. So, here we point out where it lives, in this Special Area of Conservation (SAC)”, said the coordinator of the Creamar groups,, Patricia Gutiérrez.
This marine plant is very “important” for the environment “because it produces oxygen and absorbs large amounts of CO2. In fact, one square metre of Posidonia oceanica produces ten times more oxygen than one square metre of terrestrial forest. It is also a natural barrier against coastal erosion and is home to many species, as it is a refuge and breeding ground for hundreds of them”, added Gutiérrez.
Some of these species can be seen in the photos included on this panel, which not only informs about posidonia but also raises awareness of the need to care for these submerged forests.
World Environment Day
The unveiling of this panel on this aquatic plant was timed to coincide with the celebration of two important days: World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th, and World Oceans Day, on June 8th. The installation was unveiled by the councillor for the Environment of Mijas, Marco Cortés (PP), and one of the department’s technicians, Juan Luis Vega. The councillor stressed that “we felt it was vital to focus this event around these days and highlight their importance. We often focus on the importance of the environment, the one we touch, the tangible one we can see, but not the one we cannot see, which is the one under the sea”.
Next to this panel, an information stand was set up to showcase all the activities carried out by Creamar volunteers, who, under the Marine Protection Network of the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, meet in four groups.
