It was in the year 1586 that Our Lady of the Rock (Virgen de la Peña) appeared to the shepherds Juan and Asunción at the very spot where the chapel that houses and venerates her image now stands, in El Compás, Mijas Pueblo. On Tuesday, June 2, the 440th anniversary of this event will be commemorated. To mark the occasion, the Brotherhood of Our Lady, the Most Holy Virgin of the Rock has organized a series of religious services beginning on May 30, 31, and June 1 at 7:30 p.m., with a three-day devotional celebration (triduum) led by parish priest Hermán Marcel Lunar at the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Rock.

On Tuesday, June 2, the celebrations will continue with the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:30 a.m., proceeding from the Parish of the Immaculate Conception to El Compás. At 12:00 noon, the Angelus will be prayed, accompanied by the ringing of church bells throughout the town. At 8:00 p.m., a Holy Mass will be celebrated in the grounds surrounding the chapel. Following the Eucharistic celebration, devotees will have the opportunity to take part in a veneration of the Virgin of the Rock through the traditional kissing of her mantle (besamanto).
