The structure has been reinforced, protection breakwaters rebuilt and new decking is in place

The section of Coastal Path in Riviera del Sol, which was closed so that the Department for Beaches could repair the damage caused by the Easter storm is now open. On March 30th, the large waves that shook the Mijas coast damaged this section of the path near the El Juncal beach bar, forcing the passage to be cut off in the area. The councillor responsible for the department, José Carlos Martín (Cs), stated on Wednesday the 14th that “we have already completed these emergency works; We would have liked finish earlier but it was not possible since we went to repair the damage but it was impossible because, the next day, the sea destroyed all the work that had been done, so we had to wait for the waves to allow us to carry out these works, which have concluded these days”.

The waves moved the breakwaters that protect the piles

To repair the damage, the beach operators had to “wait for the sea to recede, rebuild the foundation pile, restore the protective breakwaters and re-deck the path area”, explained Martín. It was on March 30th, Holy Tuesday, when the strong swell moved the breakwaters that protected the foundation pilings of the section of path, leading it to sink. “At first, we left a small access but, the next day, the sea became more active again, making it impassable, so we had to close the path”, said the councillor, who assured that “operators continue working on the area finishing off some details but passage through this section is now allowed”, he concluded.
