Mijas - Mijas promotes the first natural submarine park in Andalusia
“We aspire to be the first Underwater Natural Park in Andalusia because we have enormous ecological wealth on our coastline which, according to various studies, is considered a unique tropical coast in Europe”. With these words, the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (C’s) announced last Thursday the start of the procedures by the Mijas Town Hall to obtain said cataloguing from the Junta de Andalucía (Regional Government) for the Special Conservation Area (ZEC) of La Cala.
A previous study
In Spain there are only three places with this denomination: Isla de Hierro (Canary Islands), Islas Medes (Catalonia) and Isla de Ons (Galicia). A previous study carried out by professors José Enrique García and Serge Gofas already revealed the singular and unique aspect of the area due to the variety of exotic African and European species as well as Mediterranean and Atlantic species that converge in its waters. “The declaration as Natural Park would provide us with a figure of protection for this area that would avoid practices such as poaching, among others”, said the councillor for Tourism of the Mijas Town Hall.
