Mijas has three Smoke-free Beaches after joining the Andalusian Network of Sanitary Services and SmokeFree Spaces of the Regional Government. These are CalahondaLa Luna Royal Beach, El Bombo and La Cala, which also have blue fl ags, and already exhibit the signposting stating the adhesion to this programme. “This is an initiative that aims to raise awareness among all citizens that we must respect the environment and about the health benefi ts of stopping smoking”, said the councillor for Beaches, José Carlos Martín (C’s ). The initiative is being made public through signs, the media and social networks and insists on the benefi ts of not smoking on these beaches for both the environment and for public health.

“The fact that we have smoke-free beaches is an advance because families come to the beaches and, if the children see people smoking on the beach, they are identifying tobacco with something they relate to leisure and we are distorting the teaching and education that we want to instill later”, stated the councillor for Health in Mijas, Mari Carmen González (C’s). The initiative has been well received by the coast entrepreneurs. “The beach is not an ashtray. We have to do everything on our part so that the sand is clean and the beaches are safe”, said Carlos Morales, delegate in Mijas of the Malaga Beach Business Association. Mijas approved its accession to the network of smoke-free beaches in January’s ordinary plenary session following a proposal presented urgently by Podemos. The motion was supported by all the municipal groups, with the abstention of the PP.
