The first balances of the tourism sector begin to arrive and confirm the sensations felt by numerous actors in the field: 2019 has been a record year, as the Costa del Sol has exceeded 13 million tourists, a record that can be described as historical. This increase represents 4.2% more than in the previous 2018, according to information provided by Turismo Costa del Sol. A total of visitors that has resulted in 14.442 million euros of economic impact, that is, 1.92% more than in 2018. As regards the origin of the visitors, the United Kingdom continues to be the first market for the Costa del Sol with a share of 29.9% of the total and experienced a significant increase of travelers of 2.3% in 2019, that is, 63,000 more passengers. Thus, England joins Germany and France registering an increase of more than 100,000 passengers between the three markets. This increase has been reflected in the national market with a growth of 7.8%, which represents another 100,000 Spanish passengers.

These figures have had an impact on employment that has increased by 2.95% to reach 179,000 jobs linked to tourism activity. Given these figures, the mayor of Mijas, Josele González (PSOE), said that “they are magnificent numbers that come to reinforce the great work that is being developed in tourism in the whole province and especially on the Costa del Sol”. For the mayor of Mijas, “Mijas is also a benchmark for quality destinations thanks to the management of its natural resources, the strengthening of its golf courses, and the quality of its services”, he concluded. For his part, the councillor for Tourism, José Carlos Martín (C’s), recalled that “within the Costa del Sol destination, our town is working hard to continue adding to the number of visitors, especially in low season so that we can break with seasonality”. In the same way, Martín affirmed, in view of the information made public, that “we have maintained the influx of British tourists, in fact, they continue being the main market on the coast in spite of Brexit. Now we have a new opportunity to show our offer in Fitur to continue consolidating segments and visiting countries as well as to seek new opportunities”, he concluded.
