The event, organized by the group of entrepreneurs and merchants, will be from May 17th to 19th next to the boulevard.

If you could not taste the skewers that were offered at the Torreón de La Cala on May 1st, don’t worry, because you can do so in a few days, also in the marine village. The Plaza del Supersol, located next to the boulevard, will host from May 17th to 19th the 1st Andalusian Festival of ‘Espeteros’ (Sardine roasters). The initiative, promoted by the Association of Entrepreneurs and Merchants of La Cala, aims to promote this gastronomic technique so typical of the coast of Malaga. “People will be able to taste ‘espetos’ and drinks at popular prices, from 1 pm to 10 pm, in the best family atmosphere”, said José María Mariscal, president of the group of merchants of La Cala. The main course of the festival, according to Mariscal, will arrive during the afternoon of Saturday the 18th, with the celebration of a contest of skewers directed, on the one hand, to professionals of the sector and, on the other, to amateurs and veterans. To choose the best skewer, different variables will be taken into account, among them, “the way in which the cane is introduced, the distance from the fire, the moment in which the piece is turned over ... even the type of wind that is blowing on that day influences when making a good ‘espeto’”, they recalled from the organization. The contest will be free for amateurs and veterans, while for professionals it will cost 100 euros. As for the winners, trophies will be distributed for the fi rst classified and there will be a cash prize of 1,000 euros for the professional category. The number to call if you want to sign up is 629 534 569. “We hope that the festival will be successful as regards participation. The intention of the merchants association is for this to become a tradition and for it to be held on a yearly ba-sis”, said Mariscal. The Mijas Town Hall, Turismo Andaluz and sponsors of the area collaborate in this event, which was presented on Tuesday 7th at the Andalusian Tourism Delegation of Malaga. During the ceremony, the mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado (C’s), said that “the initiative is very good, I have no doubt that with the collaboration of everyone and the Mijas Town Hall, which will make an important effort every year, this festival will be consolidated in time. For the delegate for Tourism, Nuria Rodríguez(C’s), “more and more tourists are coming to Malaga’s coast seduced by the gastronomy, and therefore gastronomic tourism is one of our key sectors”.
