On Wednesday, 24th of September, Mijas will once again celebrate the traditional Tourist Day in Mijas Pueblo, our most visited town by foreigners and visitors. It is the municipality’s way of thanking them for choosing to spend their holidays here. The Department of Tourism will once again mark this special day for all towns where tourism is a main source of income.
According to the councillor for the area, Francisco Jérez (Vox), “it is our way of thanking all those who have chosen us over this past year, especially this summer, as some are still here with us. This day is celebrated worldwide and we also celebrate it locally”, adding that “last year the paella ran out in just an hour, which shows how well received this initiative is. Many attendees come on organised excursions, including cruise passengers who take advantage of their stop to visit Mijas Pueblo”.
This day, said Jerez, is also a way of “reinforcing the image of Mijas as a welcoming, diverse and lively destination”. The event will take place in the Virgen de la Peña square at 12 noon. There will be a flamenco show, followed by free paella for “around 500 people” at approximately 13:30 hours, said Jerez.
Tourist season
In the absence of official occupancy data for July and August, which will be released shortly, the summer balance in Mijas is very positive. “The summer has been very good. Mijas Pueblo has been full and La Cala has also been busy. In addition, the concerts we have organised during the summer have been very successful and we are very satisfied with the number of visitors this season”, explained the councillor. Jerez said that “while other municipalities have seen a decline in average spending per visitor, we have not had that problem here. The hotels have been full, La Cala has been as busy as ever, and in Mijas Pueblo the buses have been running non-stop”.
The leisure programme organised by Tourism has helped to boost the season: "There have been four very successful concerts and this Tourist Day will be the culmination before we move into the autumn season. From spring onwards, we will resume the weekly concert programme in the gazebo in the Virgen de la Peña Square”.
